On Repeat: 4 Albums to Kick Start Your Autumn

Autumn is finally here! We’re two weeks in to the season of golden leaves, spicy beverages and snugly jumpers. Ahh, it’s my favourite time of the year…for a week or so, and then the cold sets in. At that point I need some good music to cheer me up. To help you get through the wind, rain and chilly evenings I’ve thrown together some albums that might help. Here’s what I’ve been listening to on repeat for the last few weeks.

Zipper Down – Eagles of Death Metal

Genre: Hard/Desert Rock.
Best for:
You’ve had an awesome day and want to celebrate instead of vegging out on the sofa.
How you’ll feel: Like grabbing your room mates or your man and shaking your ass around the kitchen. It’s time to dance!

Highlights:
Track 1 – Complexity: For the boogie.
Track 2 – Silverlake (K.S.O.F.M.): A humorous dig at the hipsters who live in the super-cool Silverlake area of LA. A song that echoes of Frank Zappa style humour.
Track 7 – For the sexy groove and the Queens of the Stone Age fans.
Track 10 – Save a Prayer: An unlikely Duran Duran cover that might be better than the original (…sorry Duran Duran fans, please don’t kill me).

Rudimental – We the Generation

Genre: Drum and Bass, Dance.
Best for
: Those cold mornings when you need a positive reason to drag yourself out of bed.
How you’ll feel: Like jogging out the door and taking on the day.

Highlights:
Track 1 – I Will for Love: Hit play when you turn your morning alarm off and you’ll be out of bed by the end of the first chorus.
Track 2 – Love Aint Just a Word: Track 1 helped get you out of bed. This faster paced track featuring Dizzee Rascal will get you out of the front door.
Track 16 – Run: Perfect for your morning workout warm-up.

Frank Turner – Positive Songs for Negative People

Frank Turner Album cover

Genre: Folk/Punk/Alternative Rock.
Best for:
Work sucked, you’ve missed the train home, it’s raining and you’ve decided you hate everyone. Time for a reality check to get you out of this mood.
How you’ll feel: Better, like you’ve got a handle on life. In fact, you never lost your grip.

Highlights:
Track 2 – Get Better: A big, shouty kick up the arse. Chin up and move on.
Track 7 – Out of Breath: Shorter punk track about living life now, how you want to and living it to the full.
Track 8 – Demons: A friendly reminder to take life by the horns and start living while you’re alive!

Gregory Porter – Liquid Spirit

Liquid Spirit Cover

Genre: Jazz, Soul.
Best for:
Cozy evenings snuggled under a blanket on the sofa alone or with your significant other and a good book.
How you’ll feel: Warm, relaxed, and happy. Life is good.

Highlights:
Track 2 – Liquid Spirit: A song about peoples thirst for great music. You may feel the urge to jump from under your blanket and dance around the living room in your slipper socks.
Track 4 – Water Under Bridges: A beautiful but sad song about lost love.
Track 11 – The “In” crowd: An upbeat, fast paced song about being super cool. It might make you want to throw on your coat and head down to the bar. Don’t! Stick around for the slow tracks and let Gregory’s velvet voice send you to sleep.
